HOW TO

Jewellery Summer Care

EN | SK

We all love summer — its long evenings in the city or out in nature, sunshine on our faces, and days spent by the water. It’s also the time when your jewellery gets to shine more. But with that comes its need for a little extra care. Here are a few simple tips to keep your favourite pieces looking beautiful long after the holiday season ends.

1. Sea, Pool, Shower? Not for Your Jewellery

It’s tempting to take your jewellery with you everywhere – even into the water – but we really recommend taking it off before swimming. Saltwater and chlorine can damage surface layers of the metal, especially if it is gold-plated. Silver and gold plated silver jewellery may become dull, discoloured, stained, or oxidize more quickly. And let’s not forget – cold water can shrink your fingers slightly, making rings easier to slip off and get lost while swimming.

So before you take a dip, always remove your jewellery – especially rings – and tuck them safely into a pouch to avoid scratches or losing them. No pouch on hand? Here's a tip from us: if you're at the beach or pool, chances are you've left a shirt, scarf or dress on the shore. You can slide your rings, chunky earrings or necklaces onto the fabric and tie them securely so they don’t go missing or get damaged. Take a look at how it’s done below.

2. Sunscreens & Perfumes – A Hidden Threat

Skincare in summer is a must, but many creams and perfumes contain ingredients that don’t play nicely with jewellery. They can leave a film, dull the shine, or speed up oxidation. As a rule of thumb: always apply creams and perfumes first, let them absorb completely – and *then* put on your jewellery.

3. Sweat & Summer Heat

Hot weather and sweat can make jewellery tarnish faster. Heat speeds up chemical reactions, and sweat contains salts and acids that can wear down your pieces. So in the summer, clean your jewellery more often and store it somewhere dry. If you know you’ll be in the heat all day or sweating (hello, sports!), consider leaving your jewellery at home – or be ready to give it a good clean afterwards.

4. Cleaning & Care

After a full day of summer fun, your jewellery deserves a little TLC:

1. Wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth – microfiber works best.
2. If needed, rinse it briefly in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap (no bleach or harsh chemicals), then pat it dry.
3. Skip the harsh cleaners – they can scratch the surface.
4. If your piece is heavily oxidized, follow this step-by-step guide to bring it back to life.

5. Packing for Holidays

You don’t want to overpack, but also don’t want to leave your favourite piece behind. So, how to pack smart? Take only what you really wear. If you haven’t worn it in a month, chances are you won’t wear it on holiday either. Choose pieces you love – the ones that go with everything. Think layering, not volume.

One delicate necklace? Great. Now maybe add another to layer it up. Choose a few mix-and-match pieces for more variety with less. Combine everyday essentials (like small hoops, a thin ring, a fine chain) with one statement piece for evenings.

If you’re not 100% sure your jewellery will be safe all the time, it’s better to leave sentimental or very expensive pieces at home. Take a small travel case where each piece has its place and won’t get scratched. And if you’re flying, always keep your jewellery in your carry-on – no one needs extra stress if your luggage doesn’t arrive with you.
